Jeffrey Drazen, MD, served his medical internship and residency at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston and was a clinical fellow and research fellow at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health. He is currently a Senior Physician at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and the Distinguished Parker B. Francis Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, as well as Professor of Physiology, Harvard School of Public Health and adjunct Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. In 2000, he assumed the post of editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine. The NEJM has more than half a million readers every week and the highest impact factor of any medical journal publishing original research.
John Ioannidis holds the C.F. Rehnborg Chair in Disease Prevention at Stanford University and is Professor of Medicine, Professor of Health Research and Policy, and Director of the Stanford Prevention Research Center at Stanford University School of Medicine. He has also held appointments at the University in Ioannina School of Medicine in Greece, NIH, Johns Hopkins, Tufts, Harvard, and Imperial College London and has served as President of the Society for Research Synthesis Methodology, as a member of the editorial board of 30 leading international journals and as Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Clinical Investigation. He has received the European Award for Excellence in Clinical Science, and has been inducted in the Association of American Physicians and in the European Academy of Cancer Sciences.
Djilali Annane, is Dean of School of Medicine at University of Versailles (UVSQ) and Raymond Poincaré Hospital (Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris) since 1991. He has written more than two hundred papers in national and international medical journals and textbook. He also has given more than two hundred presentations at national and international medical scientific meetings. Djillali Annane has recently been involved on several initiative to promote the use of clinical data-mining tools in the ICU including the organization for a workshop in Paris (July 2013) to initiate a collaboration on this topic between several European partners.
Yadid Ayzenberg is a PhD candidate and researcher in the Affective Computing Group at the MIT Media Lab. He is interested in personalized health, applying new technologies to empower individuals to take control of their health and wellness. At the Media Lab, Yadid designed and implemented cloud platforms for the aggregation, processing and visualization of bio-physiological sensor data and mobile contextual data. He is creating new devices and platforms that allow users to monitor their health and share the data with others. His expertise include cloud computing, real-time software, embedded systems design, and Human Computer Interface.
Omar Badawi PharmD, MPH, is a Senior Clinical Scientist with Philips Healthcare and Adjunct Assistant Professor with the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. In addition to working in product research and development, Dr. Badawi is the Program Manager for the Philips eICU Research Institute (eRI) and has been serving as the Clinical Program Manager for the eRI since its inception in 2008. The eRI supports collaborative research between industry, academia and clinicians using de-identified clinical data representing nearly 2 million ICU patients. Dr. Badawi is also a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine and a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist.
Ambar Bhattacharyya is a vice president in Bessem Venture Partner’s Cambridge, MA office. He focuses on investments in early- and growth-stage healthcare and education companies and has been closely involved in Bessemer’s investments in Verastem (IPO), OvaScience, Liazon, Fractyl Laboratories, Health Essentials and Accuvein. He is also actively involved in BVP’s investments in Cerulean and Oxagen. Prior to joining Bessemer, Ambar worked as an associate at Bain Capital Ventures. Ambar holds an MBA with distinction from Harvard Business School and a B.S. in economics and a B.A. in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated magna cum laude.
Leo Anthony Celi is an internist, an intensivist, and an infectious disease specialist. He pursued a master’s degree in biomedical informatics at MIT and a master’s degree in public health at Harvard University. He founded and directs Sana. His research interests are in the field of clinical data mining, health information systems and quality improvement. He currently holds a faculty position at Harvard Medical School as an intensivist at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and is the clinical research director for the Laboratory of Computational Physiology at MIT. Finally, he is one of the course directors for HST.936 at MIT — Health Information Systems to Improve Quality of Care in Resource-Poor Settings.
Peter Clardy, M.D., is an attending physician in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. His clinical interests include acute respiratory distress syndrome, nosocomial infections, sepsis and quality improvement in critical care. He is a co-investigator on both the NIH/NHLBI EPVent multicenter trial of esophageal pressure-guided ventilation for ARDS and a new initiative focused on optimizing ICU safety through patient engagement, system science and information technology sponsored by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. He has received numerous awards for his ongoing commitment to teaching students and trainees, including the Robert Moellering, Herrman Blumgart, and S. Robert Stone teaching awards, and the Katherine Swan Ginsburg Faculty Award for Medical Humanism.
J. Perren Cobb, M.D., is the Director, Critical Care Center, Massachusetts General Hospital; the Vice-Chair for Critical Care, Department of Anaesthesia, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine; an Associate Professor of Anaesthesia and of Surgery, Harvard Medical School; and a member of the Affiliate Faculty, Harvard Stem Cell Institute. His clinical specialty is surgical critical care with an academic interest in systems approaches to quality improvement and emergency preparedness. He is the founding Director of the MGH Critical Care Center with the mission to provide, teach, and advance the highest quality care for our sickest patients. He is also the founding Director of the U.S. Critical Illness and Injury Trials (USCIIT) Group, which fosters investigator-initiated hypothesis testing and strategic planning at the national level for critical illness and injury research.
Joseph Frassica, M.D., serves on the Philips PCCI executive leadership team as the primary Medical and Technological strategist with 35 major R&D, basic research and manufacturing sites across the globe. Reporting to the CEO in this role he provides medical and technologic leadership for the development of advanced clinical informatics, decision support, ultrasound information systems, physiologic monitoring applications and therapeutic devices. In addition, he provides primary clinical and technological oversight and guidance for research related to monitoring, clinical informatics and decision support and therapeutic devices. Current programs are focused on development of advanced predictive algorithms for patient care, the development of intelligent alarm and imaging systems as well as advanced therapeutic monitoring and diagnostic devices.
Gari Clifford is currently an Assoc. Prof. of Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering at Emory University & Georgia Tech. Prior to joining Emory, Gari was Director of the Centre for Doctoral Training in Healthcare Innovation at Oxford University’s Institute Biomedical Engineering. Before Oxford, he was a Principal Research Scientist at MIT, where he spent 6 years managing the engineering effort behind a multi-million dollar project to collect and analyze the world’s largest public database of hospital data (MIMIC II). He directs a research group focused on machine learning and signal processing to extract actionable information from medical data. In particular he focuses on mHealth in developing countries,intensive care medicine, cardiovascular disease, circadian rhythm disorders, perinatal monitoring, sleep and mental health.
Josh Gray is Vice President of Research at athenahealth, a healthcare information technology and services company headquartered in Watertown, Massachusetts. Among his responsibilities: developing partnerships with leading academic researchers, foundations and public health agencies; enhancing the athenahealth’s disease surveillance capabilities; and tracking the impact of health care reform on the 47,000 health care providers across the athenahealth network. Prior to joining athenahealth, Josh worked as a Managing Director at Advisory Board Company, a health system consulting and business intelligence company. Josh also worked as a Manager at the Boston Consulting group. Josh has an MBA in Finance and Health Care Services from the Wharton School of Business.
John Halamka, MD, MS, is a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), Chairman of the New England Healthcare Exchange Network (NEHEN), co-Chair of the national HIT Standards Committee, co-Chair of the Massachusetts HIT Advisory Committee and a practicing Emergency Physician. As CIO of BIDMC, he is responsible for all clinical, financial, administrative and academic information technology serving 3000 doctors, 14000 employees and two million patients. As Chairman of NEHEN he oversees clinical and administrative data exchange in Eastern Massachusetts.
Winston Hide gained his PhD at Temple University in Philadelphia in 1992, and was a post-doctoral fellow in molecular evolution under Wen-Hsuing Li at the University of Texas. In addition he performed post doctoral study at Baylor College of Medicine at the Human Genome Centre with Richard Gibbs and also at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington DC. Hide is now Associate Professor of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology in the Department of Biostatistics at Harvard School of Public Health where he leads development of bioinformatics addressing personal genomics approaches to public health in the developed and developing worlds and directs the HSPH Bioinformatics Core. His research addresses integration of omics data to deliver clinical translation and repurposing of drugs.
Roger Mark earned a PhD in electrical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his MD from Harvard Medical School. At present Dr. Mark is Distinguished Professor of Health Sciences and Technology, and Professor of Electrical Engineering at MIT. Current he is Senior Physician at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. His current research activities include Integrating Data, Models, and Reasoning in Critical Care (MIMIC) and PhysioNet, both of which involve physiological signal processing, cardiovascular modeling, and the development, use and open distribution of large physiological and clinical databases.
Una-May O’Reilly, PhD, is leader of the AnyScale Learning For All (ALFA) group at CSAIL, MIT. ALFA focuses on scalable machine learning frameworks for knowledge mining, prediction and analytics using “BigData”. Una-May recently received the EvoStar Award for Outstanding Achievements in Evolutionary Computation in Europe. She is a Junior Fellow (elected before age 40) of the International Society of Genetic and Evolutionary Computation, now ACM Sig-EVO. In 2013 she inaugurated the Women in Evolutionary Computation group at GECCO. She is the area editor for Data Analytics and Knowledge Discovery for Genetic Programming and Evolvable Machines (Kluwer), and editor for Evolutionary Computation (MIT Press), and action editor for the Journal of Machine Learning Research.
Charles Safran is a primary care internist who has devoted his professional career to improving patient care through the creative use of informatics. He is Chief of the Division of Clinical Computing, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School. He is a senior scientist at the National Center for Public Health Informatics at Center for Disease Control and Prevention. He is the immediate past President and Chairman of American Medical Informatics Association was previously Vice-President of the International Medical Informatics Association. He is an elected fellow of both the American College of Medical Informatics and the American College of Physicians.
Enakshi Singh is the product manager of the SAP HANA Platform for Healthcare. She works with multidisciplinary teams at SAP and collaborates with renowned genomic researchers to develop software solutions for real-time analyses of large-scale biological, lifestyle and clinical data. Enakshi received her M.Sc. in Neuroscience at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. Her Masters’ thesis focused on the developmental distribution of the NMDA receptor in the auditory brainstem of rat. She also earned a BSc. in Psychology, Neuroscience and Behavior at McMaster University.
Peter Szolovits is Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and head of the Clinical Decision-Making Group within CSAIL. His research centers on the application of AI methods to problems of medical decision making and design of information systems for health care institutions and patients. He has worked on problems of diagnosis, therapy planning, execution and monitoring for various medical conditions, computational aspects of genetic counseling, controlled sharing of health information, and privacy and confidentiality issues in medical record systems.
Daniel Talmor, MD, MPH, is the Vice-Chair for Critical Care in the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He is also an Associate Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Talmor received his medical degree from Ben Gurion University in Israel. He then earned his Masters in Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Talmor has been a critical care physician at BIDMC since 2001. His research interests are centered on the early identification and treatment of critically ill patients. He has been a co-investigator on the MIMIC-II project.
B. Taylor Thompson is Director of Pulmonary and Critical Care Translational Research at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. For 21 years he directed the Medical Intensive Care Unit at MGH where he is recognized an outstanding clinician and educator. Dr. Thompson is the Medical Director of the NHLBI-funded ARDS Clinical Coordinating Center and has chaired or currently chairs a number of DSMBs for the NHLBI and the Canadian Clinical Trials Group. His current research focuses on mesenchymal stem cell therapy for ARDS and he serves on the Steering Committees of ongoing Phase II trials for ARDS. He has published over 140 peer reviewed manuscripts.
